Soetkin Elbers SOLO
with live electronics
In this solo project, Soetkin brings together her love of early music with live electronics. She takes works she has performed throughout her career in traditional settings and gives them a personal, contemporary sound.
The electronics become a second voice. They accompany, answer, sing along, harmonize, distort or create space around the acoustic voice. Using synthesizers, vocoder, loopers and other live processing, an electro-acoustical duet between voice and electronics unfolds, both parts performed by Soetkin. Improvisation plays an important role: sometimes subtly within a composition, sometimes to the extent that a piece can take on a very different length or shape.
For Soetkin, early music is not a museum piece. The emotions and affects expressed by baroque composers are still recognisable today. Drawing on her experience with baroque rhetoric and gesture, she looks for ways to make that expressiveness audible in the present. She is also fascinated by the pop quality that can be found in this music: Dowland can become almost pop-like, Merula's chromaticism turns into distortion, and an old folk song can sit alongside Bach and Purcell without any need to distinguish between 'high' and 'low' culture.
Since its premiere in Brussels in 2024, the project has been presented at De Studio Antwerp and WORM Rotterdam, among others.
